Soul Custody

Thursday I’m beginning work on a new MOW (Movie of the Week) called Soul Custody for Force Four entertainment. I’ll be running the RED on-set workflow cart (which I’ve been building the last several days). Most exciting (for me) is that I’ll be shadowing the director throughout the production.

Since my part of the workflow is simple I’ll have a decent amount of time to spend watching and learning. I do well absorbing through osmosis, being in proximity, observing the little things, assimilating the habits and tools of another tradesman. While I’m itching to start work on a few of my own long-awaited projects, it’s great opportunity to learn and get to know some people in new circles.

I’ve moved

I love my Jeep Cherokee.

It was love at first sight. I was test-driving the same old maid’s – Honda Civics, Toyota Corollas – when I spotted it. Fire-engine red, sitting on the corner with hot new tires, halfway up a berm looking ready to tackle the trail. I couldn’t resist.

Three years and 100,000 clicks later, it’s like the day we met. But one thing has changed: $90 a tank. Something had to give. So I moved.

I’ve got a nice new place near Commercial Drive, top floor of a four-storey house, view of the mountains, lots of light & air. It’s nestled in a quadrangle of Clark, Commercial, Grandview and Broadway. Close to everything but far enough that the street outside is quiet.

Guzzling gas isn’t the whole story… though $500 in a month was getting excessive. It’s more the time lost to traffic and travel. And while living in the valley has it’s perks, everything I’m involved with is here in the city. So, after a relatively painless move (thanks to friends and practiced packing) me and my Jeep have our new home. I’ve yet to tackle the boxes but already I can tell – this space marks a new beginning.

In Fresno

There’s something satisfying about throwing a passport in a carry-on with a few changes of clothes and heading out the door – no gear, no cameras (well… almost. Does an LX-2 count?), and the work has been done. Now I’m just along for the ride.

A heroic all-nighter by my editor, Steve Plitt had me exiting the door with two freshly burnt copies of Rwanda: Hope Rises in my hands. I caught the gate as they were making last call, and here I am: In Fresno.

This is the first time an audience will see a completed cut of the film, the culmination of three year’s work. And it has turned out better than I imagined. Having a skilled editor see with fresh eyes has brought the story to life again for me, and I’m excited to show it to people. It still has yet to go through the spit & polish of a final mix etc. but I think the three audiences this weekend will enjoy the experience.

If you’re in the Fresno area, get in touch and I’ll let you know the details of the screenings.

Last Day on Sanctuary

Today will be my last day on the set of Sanctuary, the new SciFi Network TV show that airs in October. It’s been fun working with the crew, helping them get up to speed with the RED camera, and seeing a Vancouver show built from the ground up.

Now it’s on to finishing touches of Rwanda: Hope Rises before our first audience screening in Fresno this coming weekend…

RED on Set

This week I’ve been working with Martin Wood and David Geddes on the set of Sanctuary, SciFi network’s latest TV show. Our new company, Inspired Cinema, is providing the complete camera & support package, as well as a data management cart (nicknamed Winivision, after the guy who operates the cart). I’m on set for the first few weeks providing workflow support. I haven’t had much time to take pictures, but here’s a few from the last couple days of shooting (click the pic to view).

In Cambridge

It’s 1:30am Ontario time… just got back from a great night of networking and awards hosted by a national non-profit foundation. Made several connections for screening Rwanda: Hope Rises here in the fall.

Now for a quick ‘nap’ and up in three hours to catch a plane…

Stuff I Use: The Red Camera

In 2006, DIY filmmakers were splashed with news of a hot new camera, the RED. I lined up with many other eager would-be camera owners and put my $1000 on hopes that it would deliver. After having shot with it myself in Rwanda and more recently back in Vancouver, and after prepping it for several high-profile shows, I can confidently say that this camera Kicks Ass.

4K, RAW photography, shooting to compact flash, flexible, tough, fast to work with, and it makes beautiful images. The proof is in the footage:

If you’ve got bandwidth to spare, here’s the clip compressed in 720p and full 2k. (right-click to download)

Jeep in Austin

Aww… it’s my jeep, nestled next to the Hansen Family Van at our abode in Austin, TX. Eerily enough, you can find this photo yourself by clicking here. I guess Google’s been sending vans around with cameras on the roof, documenting city streets across America. Now you too can stalk your friends from the comfort of your living room…

This photo would’ve been taken between August and November of last year, while I studied at the Piko Fellowship with Chris Hansen.
