“The Duchess” a Film Race Finalist!

“The Duchess” was a 2009 Vancouver Film Race finalist! The film was selected out of 34 in competition by judges in New York to run for the top prize. Last night was the awards announcement at the Anza Club (host of the Celluloid Social Club). In the end we didn’t win… but we had a good time with the other contestants watching everyone’s films and hearing Q&A’s from each team.

Thanks for everyone who supported Team Cinesketch for the race! Here’s a link to some of our sponsors:

If you haven’t watched the film yet, head over to the facebook page where you can become a fan and watch the video.

“The Duchess” Screening July 22nd

The Duchess

Victor (played by Matt Chandler) thinks he has things straight when he nabs the Duchess (Joy Pecknold) for theft. But the Duchess spins a tale faster than a Mach 1 Mustang’s wheels in a burnout… can you keep up?

“The Duchess”, a short film created for the 2009 Vancouver Film Race, is screening Wednesday July 22nd at Fifth Avenue Cinemas. Tickets are $9. Hit the link for more info (our film is at the 7pm screening).

We had an awesome time making the film. Car chases, burnouts, gunshots and subterfuge… all good fun. I had the pleasure of directing, with Jesse Rosten as DOP, Matt Chandler penning as well as starring with Joy Pecknold and Dan Stewart. Hope you can make it!

Rwanda DVD & Toronto Screening

We had a fantastic crowd at tonight’s screening at the Bloor in Toronto. Engaged, energetic… it was inspiring to see so much passion in a crowd of film-goers. Samputu gave a great performance to kick it all off. I’m honoured to have been able to meet him, and to have his music such an integral part of the film.

For those out there interested in getting your own copy of Rwanda: Hope Rises, you can sign up for the mailinglist on the film’s website. You’ll be notified as soon as copies are available for purchase.

Thanks to everybody who came out tonight!

A successful premiere

Thanks to everyone who came out to the Canadian Premiere of Rwanda: Hope Rises. We had a great time, and a great turnout, almost selling out the first show. A lot of faces I didn’t recognize, which for me is one of our biggest successes. Everything went well – the excellent venue, a great pre-reception with wine, cheese and mingling, and a beautiful screen to watch the story play out on.

We had great media coverage, which helped with the turnout. Below is a video from local daily 24 Hours:

The film was also covered by the Province, Global TV, and the print version of 24 Hours which has a high readership on the daily commute.

I’ve been laying low, taking it easy over the last couple days. It was an exhausting sprint getting everything ready, but I am immensely satisfied with the result. Big thanks to Kelly, Mike, Chris and the rest of the volunteers, and to Wellspring for hosting the event. This event wouldnt’ve happened without you.
